A Japanese Dragon Garden

The front garden is north-east facing and approximately 3m x 20m, including the existing drive. The rear garden is south-west facing, approximately 10m x 20m and the soil is acidic, sandy loam.  The client wanted an attractive Japanese style entrance to his property and a low maintenance, relaxing space in the rear with a definite Japanese theme consisting of rocks,  Japanese lanterns and Japanese plants.  I was inspired by Mirei Shigemori's contemporary gardens and the Enkoji garden in Kyoto designed by Minoru Fujii (see my blog or Sitting Spiritually for the rationale behind the design).

Requirements for the new garden/landscape architecture:

  • No grass
  • Granite paving to match/complement the Japanese lanterns and rocks
  • Japanese trees, shrubs and perennials
  • No gravel in the rear garden
  • A metal pergola with Wisteria

" Ann was the Garden Designer for a project we undertook just outside of Ringwood, Hampshire. We would have no hesitation recommending Ann to design a garden for you.  From producing a number of clear and concise drawings to work from, to being on hand to assist with setting out plants and trees, Ann was always contactable as a point of reference if we had any questions or needed confirmation on orders the client had scheduled.   We found Ann to be very personable and approachable, she had great rapport with the site team and the client, which I feel helped produce a wonderful garden.  We hope to work with Ann again in the future." Connor Scott, Landscape Designer/Estimator, E. Williams Landscapes Ltd.

"Ann developed a Japanese garden plan for my front and back garden incorporating various rocks, stones, stone lanterns, paved areas, stairs and walkways. Planting included various trees, shrubs, and ground cover - in excess of 1,000 plants. The Plan was very professional and clear to understand, and was redeveloped over several months as new ideas were added into the plan on a very timely basis. Ann also recommended landscapers, building materials, planting, and took part in overseeing acquisitions, and building work, and overall project oversight. My garden has exceeded all expectations and I owe it all to Ann - hiring her was easily the best decision I made during the entire project." Mr P., St Leonards, Dorset (see reviews on Houzz

The garden has been constructed using Marshalls' Fairstone Eclipse Granite Paving and Fairstone Sawn Granite Setts and 'Copper Slate' Stoneface Drystack Veneer Walling by E. Williams Landscaping of Southampton (see more photos on Houzz), the plants were sourced from Rhino RockChichester Trees and Shrubs, and Junker's Nursery, and the stunning, Japanese style swinging seat was from Sitting Spiritually
